I can’t wait to receive the May issue of O magazine. In it, Oprah and other celebrities give advice to their younger selves. I always love articles like this for various reasons, but I will share with you a couple: learning through other peoples rough patches and what they would do differently is a great way to weather the storm of your own rough patch. Knowing that the people that you may admire are human just like ourselves and have dealt with pain, disappointment, and have overcome obstacles that could have weighed them down and prevented them from accomplishing their dream is a great testimony and lets us know that as long as we persevere, we too can achieve greatness in accomplishing our dreams.
In the May issue, Oprah addresses her younger self as beautiful brown-skinned girl. She writes, “You’ve spent too many days and years trying to please others and be what they wanted you to be,” she writes. “You will have to learn that the wounds of your past — rape, molestation, whippings for ‘stepping out of place,’ and not being allowed to show anger or cry afterward — damaged your self-esteem,” she says. “Even then you understood that success was a process and that moving with the flow of life and not against it would be your greatest achievement,” she says.
Academy award winning actress, Octavia Spencer writes, “Hello Traveler, As you make your way along life’s tumultuous highways, it’s important to note that you should always carry a map, have plenty of fuel in the tank, and take frequent rest stops.”
Although, I have not accomplished many of my dreams yet, I would still offer advice to my teenage self and say, “Hello Diva (in training), God has not forgotten you! It won’t be like this for much longer. He sees your pain and He will replace it with great love…He has your back. When given the opportunity: love yourself deeper, trust a little more, smile a bit wider, laugh a lot harder, step out of your comfort zone, and be more courageous!
The May issue, hits news stands April 10.
