Hey Divas,
Remember a few weeks ago when I told you about me using my passion for interior design to decorate the brand new apartment of a friend/client? Well here I am to show you our progress so far.
Let’s start with their master bedroom (they actually have 3 bedrooms, one that will be used as a nursery in a few months, and one that will serve as a guestroom/slash office). The first question that I always ask is what feeling to do you want the room to have? and she said warm, super comfortable, elegant, and modern. Now that may not seem like much to some, but to combine that into an interior design scheme can be a bit challenging. Since their apartment is in a new question building, every single room was completely bare, which was great for me because I love a blank canvas. The only thing that we couldn’t change was the wall colors, but the building manager was flexible enough to allow us to hang and screw items in the walls.
The first obstacle that we had to tackle was to create more closet space. Their bedroom had one closet that was literally about 39 inches wide with one pole at the top, definitely not enough for two young working professionals. Her shoes alone could feel that closet, so I got to one of my favorite parts of the interior design process…designing a brand new wardrobe organization system that would work for the both of them.
We decided to go for the dark wood color because it definitely combines many of her key words: warm, elegant, and modern. The closet spans 118″ across and is 92″ in height which gave them ample additional storage is their master bedroom.
Next I addressed the headboard and room rug. I may not like carpet in living rooms and other high traffic areas, but I love a rug in a bedroom. Who wants a jolt of a cold floor on their feet the first thing in the morning? Besides being practical, a rug can give you a warm & cozy feel that you just can’t get from hardwood.
If you follow me on Instagram, you may notice this headboard. I actually bought it for myself earlier this year. It was on sale at HomeGoods for $399 which was a steal for the quality and construction. When I bought it, my husband and I just stored it in our basement waiting for the day when we would redecorate our bedroom. When setting up a scheme for the room, I sent my friend/client various pictures of headboards including a picture of this one to show her what I was being inspired by. Out of all of the pictures that I sent, what were the odds that she would absolutely fall in love with this one? Well she did! She asked me where can we get it? I told her that it wasn’t for sale; it was just an inspiration pic to show the kind of full tufting and warm colors that I was looking for in a headboard. She asked what store sold it and I eventually told her that it was actually mine and it was purchased months prior. After seeing the disappointed look on her face and not finding one that was comparable at a descent price, I decided to go ahead and sell her my headboard. It was actually a bitter sweet moment for me; bitter because I loved that headboard (which is why I bought it and stored it), but sweet because of the look on her face when we delivered it; she was so happy and so grateful! When I am in work mode, it is really all about making the client happy to the best of my ability, besides only God knows when I would have actually got around to using it (and hubby assured me that when we are ready we will get one just right for us). Also in all honestly the headboard was perfect for their bedroom because it had a splash of all the colors that we were using in their bedroom.
After deciding on the headboard, everything else rolled pretty easily. We ordered a new queen size mattress set (Macy’s), new luxe comforter set and curtains (Bed, Bath & Beyond), side chest & lamps (Ikea). The lamps are actually only a temporary solution until we track down the perfect lamp set that will combine all of the elements that we are looking for. Once we find them, then this lamp set will most likely be transferred into the guest room. The rectangular silver cutout in the wall on the left is where they will install their air-conditioner later this week.
They were so excited with the results of the bedroom that I can’t wait to show you the other rooms as they are completed. The last room that I will post is probably their living room because we ordered a custom made Italian top grain leather sectional that is going to take about 6-8 weeks to be delivered. I am so excited for it to be delivered, but in the meantime the next room that I will post will most likely be the guest room/ office.
Stay tuned
